Reykjanes District Court sentenced a woman in her early forties to 15 months in prison yesterday for attempting to smuggle 670 grams of cocaine to Iceland by hiding the drugs under a wig, which was sewed to her hair.
The cocaine had a 65 percent concentration and it is believed that approximately two kilos of cocaine can be produced from cocaine of a 22 percent concentration, visir.is reports.
The woman, who is of Latvian origin, was arrested at Keflavík International Airport upon her arrival from Spain in early August. According to mbl.is, she is considered to be a drug mule rather than having organized the smuggling herself.
The woman has been in Iceland before but does not have a history with the police. She confessed to the attempted drug smuggling during questioning by the police and before Reykjanes District Court.
In addition to serving time in prison, the convict is to cover almost ISK 600,000 (USD 4,700, EUR 3,700) in legal costs.
