A group of MPs for the Independence party want Minister of Industry Katrín Júlíusdóttir to ensure that focused research will be conducted on whether oil or gas is to be found off the coast of northeast Iceland, visir.is reports.
According to a bill proposal presented at Althingi last Monday, the assistance of international experts will be solicited. The choice of location will be based of former research.
According to the MPs, in recent years the so-called Drekasvaedi, Dragon Area, has been the focus in regards to oil drilling. That venture, for a variety of reasons, seems to have subsided. On the other hand, it is unclear why the emphasis has been laid on Drekasvaedi, when areas allowing for easier and less costly research remain untouched.
