MP Resigns from Committee Due to Controversy

MP for the Independence Party Ásbjörn Óttarsson resigned yesterday from the nine-person parliamentary committee, which is supposed to comment on the Althingi parliament’s investigation committee’s report on the banking collapse.

“Lately matters that are related to me have been covered in the media,” Óttarsson said in a statement. According to Fréttabladid, he decided to resign from the committee, “to secure that there will be peace surrounding its work.”

“The cases that the committee will cover are of the nature that nothing should divert the attention from the important work that it is meant to undertake, including the personal matters of single committee members,” Óttarsson concluded.

The MP confessed on television earlier this week that he had paid illegal dividends to himself and his wife. He stated that he had been unaware that his actions were illegal and that he had repaid the amount as soon as he found out.
