Einar Oddur Kristjánsson, an MP for the Independence Party (Sjálfstaedisflokkurinn), suffered a fatal heart attack on Saturday while hiking Kaldbakur in Dýrafjördur, the Westfjords’ highest mountain.
Kristjánsson, born in Flateyri in the Westfjords in 1942, leaves behind a wife and three grown children. Between 1968 and until he became an MP in 1995, Kristjánsson was involved in operating several Westfjordian fishing companies, Morgunbladid reports.
The MP fought for strengthening the fishing industry in the Westfjords and claimed the fishing quota system had failed, following a drastic cut in the cod fishing quota and news of a fishing company in his hometown selling part of its quota.
