Independence Party MP Unnur Brá Konráðsdóttir made history yesterday by breastfeeding her baby from the podium in Alþingi as she explained her vote regarding the new Foreigners’ Act.
Unnur Brá, who is also the chair of Alþingi’s Judicial Affairs and Education Committee, is most likely the first member of Alþingi, the Icelandic parliament, to multitask this way.
According to RÚV, MP Svandís Svavarsdóttir of the Left-Green Movement, offered to hold the baby, who was born September 1, while her mother addressed members of parliament. To the little one, being left behind in the arms of someone from the opposition was out of the question. Thus, she accompanied her mother to the podium.
The little girl, who is Unnur Brá’s third child, already has an impressive resumé. She recently attended the Arctic Circle conference and a meeting at the University of Iceland to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Reykjavík Summit.
