MP Apologises For Accusing Red Cross of Wasting Money

Ásmundur Friðriksson, a member of the Icelandic parliament, has apologised for claiming that the Red Cross wasted away money on lawyers who aided refugees.

Ásmundur has been under heat for the past weeks for suggesting that taking in refugees decreases funding for others in need.

During an interview with Fréttablaðið yesterday, Ásmundur refused to explain how much the state subsidies his driving. Instead, he accused reporters of not asking how much Red Cross lawyers got paid for mailing the Ministry of Justice about refugees.

He later apologised on Facebook, claiming he was feeling under the weather when contacted by the reporter. “An interview which I shouldn‘t have taken part in due to these circumstances. It only leads to bad things and I apologise to the Red Cross and its staff for saying something that I should never have. The organisation deserves better.”
