death-announcementsVilhjálmur Óli Valsson, who used to work at the Icelandic Coast Guard, passed away at Landspítali National University Hospital on Saturday evening at the age of 41. He had struggled with cancer for over a year.

Vilhjálmur garnered nationwide attention for his efforts to raise funds in the Icelandic Cancer Society’s initiative Moustache March, raising a higher amount than any other contestant, almost ISK 1.7 million (USD 14,000, EUR 11,000), Fréttablaðið reports.

In an interview in late March, Vilhjálmur commented: “It is good to be able to leave something behind and carry on helping people. Hopefully it will be the last thing I do: to save a life. To help a little.”
