Moustache March Winner Hopes to Save Lives

Vilhjálmur Óli Valsson collected the most donations, ISK 1,639,000 (USD 13,234, EUR 10,289), in the Icelandic Cancer Society’s Moustache March initiative, aimed at raising awareness of male-specific cancer and raise funds for research and treatment.

“This is a fantastic feeling,” Vilhjálmur told Fréttablaðið. He didn’t set out with a specific goal, he added, thinking that ISK 150,000 would be a good achievement.

“My support network took care of it and there seem to be some people among them who are very competitive,” commented Vilhjálmur, who has struggled with cancer for over a year.

Participating in the initiative has helped him come to terms with his condition, Vilhjálmur said, who for many years worked for the Icelandic Coast Guard.

Vilhjálmur stated he doesn’t know how many lives he has saved at his work. “Some tens of lives, I guess. It is good to be able to leave something behind and carry on helping people. Hopefully it will be the last thing I do: to save a life. To help a little.”
