Ásta Lovísa Vilhjálmsdóttir died at the National Hospital of Iceland this week at the age of 30. She leaves behind a fiancé and three young children. Vilhjálmsdóttir was chosen “Icelander of the Year” in 2006 by glossy magazine Ísafold.
After being diagnosed with cancer, Vilhjálmsdóttir started an open public discussion about the disease.
According to Morgunbladid, she appeared in television interviews on several occasions and described the progression of her illness and her fight with cancer on her blog.
Vilhjálmsdóttir’s fight received nationwide attention and many visited her blog to show support.
The last blog entry was posted by Vilhjálmsdóttir’s brother on May 30, announcing his sister’s death. The next day nearly 16,000 people had commented with their condolences.
