“We didn’t make it to the hospital, it’s as simple as that,” Óladóttir told Fréttabladid of Thursday’s experience. She and her husband Gunnthór Jónsson live with their family in Seydisfjördur.
The trip to the region’s only delivery room in Neskaupstadur takes about one and a half hours by car and three mountain passes have to be crossed.
A midwife from Eskifjördur, a neighboring town, was in the car with them and she delivered the boy, which is the couple’s third child.
Their firstborn was delivered inside the hospital in Neskaupstadur but their second child was born inside an airplane on the way to the hospital in Akureyri.
