A woman who is suspected of having left her newborn son to die in a dumpster outside a hotel in Reykjavík last weekend has now been released from hospital and taken to security confinement at Iceland’s maximum security prison Litla-Hraun where she will serve her custody sentence.

The woman, who is in her early twenties, was admitted to hospital with abdominal pains and bleeding on Saturday. Physicians were certain that she had just given birth even though she wouldn’t admit to it and notified police authorities who found the infant’s body.
The woman wasn’t questioned until yesterday, upon being released from hospital. After questioning she was taken to Litla-Hraun, visir.is reports.
Senior officer of the Reykjavík Metropolitan Police investigative department Fridrik Smári Björgvinsson told Morgunbladid that the investigation is well underway.
The police are trying to determine whether the woman realized she was pregnant, among other issues.
