Most want Independence Party-Social Democrat coalition

According to a new opinion poll conducted by Fréttabladid, 35 percent of participants want Iceland’s new government to be a coalition between the Independence Party (Sjálfstaedisflokkurinn) and the Social Democratic Alliance (Samfylkingin).

Almost as many, or 32.4 percent, would like the current Independence Party-Progressive Party (Framsóknarflokkurinn) coalition government to continue.

A leftist government made up of the Social Democrats and the Left-Green Movement (Vinstri graenir) with support from the Progressive Party is the third favorite option, supported by 18.6 percent of participants.

The least favorite option is a coalition by the Independence Party and the Left Greens, which 14.3 percent of participants preferred.

Fréttabladid approached 800 voters via telephone yesterday and 74.5 percent participated in the opinion poll.
