A new poll shows that respondents have a great deal of expectations for Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir and her party, the Social Democrats, in general.
Government only months old
Parliamentary elections in Iceland were held last November. Following the results, three parties–the Social Democrats, the Reform Party and the People’s Party–were able to successfully negotiate a joint platform and form a 36-seat majority out of Parliament’s 63 seats. To be more exact, these three parties have 15, 11 and 10 seats, respectively.
Ideologically speaking, these three parties are not as different from each other as the previous coalition, led by the Left-Greens with the support of the conservative Independence Party and the centrist Progressive Party. The current government is more or less centrist, with the Social Democrats hewing to the left. That being the case, one might expect similar expectations from voters towards these three parties but, as Vísir reports, this has not been the case.
Most expectations on PM
Of the government’s 11 ministers, respondents to a new poll from Maskína held the greatest expectations for Kristrún, with 36.7% saying they had the highest expectations of her. 11.7% said the same of Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir of the Reform Party and Health Minister Alma Möller of the Social Democrats.
In total, the minister from the Social Democrats had the highest expectations of 54.8% of respondents; Reform Party ministers had 30.2% and People’s Party ministers had 15.1%.
Bearing in mind that the next parliamentary elections will be 2028, the current government has much to live up to.
