Only 12 out of the 206 applicants for Icelandic citizenship who underwent an exam last month to prove their knowledge of the Icelandic language, failed to pass the exam. Its execution went well, according to the organizer, the Education Testing Institute.

Passing such an exam is a new requirement for acquiring citizenship and this year is the first time it takes place, Fréttabladid reports.

The institute concluded that the difficulty level of the exam had been appropriate since it is a scanning exam and first and foremost thought of as an aid tool for applicants but not a demanding filter exam as is common in many other countries.
