Mosque Design Winners Announced

The winners of a design competition for a mosque in Reykjavík were announced yesterday, RÚV reports. They are architects Gunnlaugur Stefán Baldursson and Pia Bickman. Their proposal calls for an 8.5 meter (30.5 feet ) tall building with an 18.5 meter tall tower. The building will have a turf roof with a domed window, rising 1 meter beyond the roof. The prize money received for the winning proposal is ISK 2.5 million (USD 18,800, EUR 17,700). A total of 63 proposals were submitted.

The building will be 640 square meters and on two floors. Its look is intended to unite Icelandic architectural traditions with Muslim ones.

Much controversy has surrounded the construction of the mosque for years. The Reykjavík City Council debated whether and where the Muslim Association of Iceland should be given a lot for the project. The result was that a lot was allocated in Sogamýri, Reykjavík, in September of 2013. A representative for the Progressive Party suggested revoking the decision to allocate the lot and have the residents of Reykjavík vote on the issue.

Funding of the project has been hotly debated this week after President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson stated that Saudi Arabia intended to support the construction by contributing USD 1 million.

Both Salmann Tamimi of the Muslim Association of Iceland and Imam Ahmad Seddeeq of the Islamic Cultural Center in Iceland have stated that they have not received the funds. However, mbl.is reports that the Islam Foundation of Iceland received the funds. That foundation owns the building which houses the Islamic Cultural Center. Ahmad confirmed this with Iceland Review Online in a phone conversation earlier today.
