This town, located 17 km north of Reykjavik, with a population of approximately 8,000, has been home to Icelandic Nobel Prize winner, Halldór Laxness. In addition, it is home to “Sundlaugin,” the empty swimming pool studio, which music group, Sigur Ros, uses to record its albums.

Today’s birthday celebration will also mark the start of the town’s festival, “Í Túninu Heima” (My Field at Home) which will continue until August 26.
