A young man and a 4-year-old girl died in a traffic accident on Sudurlandsvegur highway in south Iceland last weekend. Citizens have demanded immediate improvements of road safety.
The notoriously dangerous road has claimed the lives of 54 people since 1972. This year 27 people have died in traffic accidents in Iceland. Fréttabladid reports.
Hannes Kristmundsson, who lost his son to traffic on Sudurlandsvegur a few years ago, demands immediate improvements of the Icelandic road system.
He told Fréttabladid that he does not believe that the authorities would like to hear news of more deaths which could have been prevented with safer roads.
Minister of Transport Sturla Bödvarsson agrees. He told Fréttabladid that it is important to speed up operations intended to improve the safety of Sudurlandsvegur.
