More Teams Than Ever in School Fitness Competition

The elementary school fitness competition Skólahreysti, which is being held for the sixth time this year, begins today. Teams from 120 schools across the country will compete against each other—more teams than have ever participated before.

The competition was first held in 2005 when only six schools participated. However, now there are so many teams that they have to be divided into ten qualifying groups, Morgunbladid reports.

The qualifying rounds end on March 18 and then the top teams of each group will compete in the final in Laugardalshöll arena in Reykjavík on April 29. There are two girls and two boys from the 9th or 10th grade (14 to 15-year-olds) on each team.

The competition is broadcast live on television and attracted more than 13,000 spectators last year. It was founded by husband and wife Andrés Gudmundsson and Lára B. Helgadóttir with the goal of encouraging children and teenagers to exercise.
