More lose their home to debt

Thirty families have lost their homes this year because of debt. If this development continues 200 families will lose their home by the end of the year, which is twice as many as in 2006.

Thurídur Árnadóttir, director of the forced sales department at the District Magistrate Office in Reykjavík, told Fréttabladid: “This indicates fewer can pay their debts now, people probably have trouble with getting loans to pay other loans.”

Reykjavík Police are currently assisting the District Magistrate Office with locating 120 individuals whose properties have to be seized by the government. Those who have not responded to a letter from the Magistrate Office will be brought to the Office by police.
