The number of Icelanders who seek healthcare services abroad has more than doubled since last year, RÚV reports. In 2017, 14 Icelanders went abroad to seek medical care. Since the beginning of 2018, 43 have done so. Most are pensioners seeking dental services. The data comes from Icelandic Health Insurance (IHI).
Patients residing in Iceland have the right to seek medical services in other EEA countries and receive reimbursement for said services. This right applies to patients who have been waiting to see a specialist for more than 30 days or been waiting for surgery or treatment for more than 90 days since diagnosis. Patients can also seek services abroad in the case of emergency or for diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
