More Icelandair Flights Canceled

Three Icelandair flights between Keflavík International Airport and New York and Keflavík and Vancouver were canceled today.

Information officer at Icelandair, Guðjón Arngrímsson, said he could not rule out that more flights would be canceled today. Passengers are asked to follow announcements by the airline, reports.

A total of 90 flights as well as all flights to St. Petersburg this summer have so far been canceled due to a pilots strike. Many flights have also been delayed.

A legislative bill on declaring the strike by Icelandair pilots illegal following the collapse of negotiations between the airline and the Union of Icelandic Pilots last week was passed 32:14 by the Icelandic parliament on Thursday.

The bill seems to have made matters even worse because while the pilots are not allowed to strike they have refused to work overtime, resulting in cancelations and delays, often with little warning, reports.

According to the legislation, the Union of Icelandic Pilots and Icelandair have until June 1 to reach an agreement or the matter will be placed before an industrial disputes tribunal. Members of the government stressed that the bill had been a last resort.

Negotiations between the Union of Icelandic Pilots and the airline are ongoing.
