More Cruise Ships Headed to Iceland in 2013

One of the largest ships to arrive in Iceland this summer, the Caribbean Princess, weighing 113,000 gross tons, arrived in Reykjavík harbor on Thursday. Another 15 cruise ships are expected to arrive in Reykjavík before the end of September.

81 vessels with space for 100,000 guests were booked to arrive this summer, Morgunblaðið reports.

Marketing manager for Faxaflóa Bay harbor Ágúst Ágústsson says that he expects this number to increase next year.

According to Ágúst, 76 vessels with space for a total of around 100,000 guests have already made bookings for next summer. Ágúst calculates that at least four ships carrying 4-5,000 passengers will be docked in Reykjavík harbor at any one time, including two very large vessels.

The high number of visitors presents a challenge when considering the number of buses and guides required to meet the demand for day trips to popular tourist destinations like the Golden Circle, Ágúst says.
