Money Stolen from Landmannalaugar Returned

A young man turned himself in at the police station in Hvolsvöllur on Sunday and returned money he claimed to have stolen from the donation boxes at Landmannalaugar hot springs.

He was interrogated at the police station. At the conclusion of a full investigation, the case will then be forwarded to the prosecution.

Last Saturday wardens at Landmannalaugar arrived to find that the admissions donation box and the pay boxes of three of the automated showers had been broken into.

Because of the thieves’ primitive method of breaking into the pay boxes, half the showers will remain non-functional for at least the next week.

Elíza Lífdís Óskarsdóttir, warden, told mbl.is that not much money was stolen.

”It was at most a few thousand.”

The staff were primarily disappointed that someone would do this at all, and concerned that repairs would be time-consuming—which would likely be frustrating to the large number of tourists in the area during this peak-travel season.
