Monastery in the Eastfjords

A Roman Catholic monk order is planning to buy a lot in Kollaleira near Reydarfjördur in Iceland’s Eastfjords to build a monastery for monks. It would be the first in Iceland since the Reformation in 1550.

“I like the idea very much,” Ásmundur Ásmundsson, who works at a real estate agency in Reydarfjördur, told RÚV. “This project has taken one and a half years, and I was given the task of finding a location for them [the monk order].”

“Back in the days Kollaleira belonged to Skriduklaustur [monastery], so I find this project very pleasing and enjoyable,” Ásmundsson added.

Other residents also seemed positive towards the monastery.
