Mommies and Muffins Cancelled

Mommies and Muffins, an initiative organized by a group of women wanting to sell muffins for a local charity will not take place during this year’s bank holiday festival “Ein med öllu” at Akureyri, north Iceland.

The charity bake sale was held for the first time last year and a profit of ISK 400,000 (USD 3400 or EUR 2400) was donated to the Maternity ward at Akureyri’s regional hospital.

The Public Health Authorities in southeast Iceland informed the women in question that homemade baking did not comply with public sanitary standards, Morgunbladid reports.

“We did not think we’d have to ask permission from the Public Health Authorities to sell homemade products for charity; we sold 1000 muffins last year and donated the profits to the maternity ward. This year was meant to be even bigger than last year,” Audur Skúladóttir, a spokesperson for the group told Morgunbladid last Thursday.

Last year the event was held in the Akureyri Lystigardur park, the Hortus Botanicus.
