The Icelandic woman who has been missing from the Fljótshlíð area for over a week is called Ásta Stefánsdóttir, it has been revealed.
Ásta is a 35-year-old lawyer and a resident of Reykjavík. She is slim, about 1.8 meters tall, with blond highlighted hair.
Police are calling on anyone who visited the Fljótshlíð area, in the area near Múlakot, between the evening of Saturday 8th June and the evening of the following Monday to make contact on +354 488 4110 or by emailing [email protected]. Sometimes witnesses hold useful clues for the police without even realizing it.
Ásta has been searched for since last Tuesday. Her partner, Pino De Los Angeles Becerra Bolaños, a sports scientist, was found dead in Bleiksárgljúfur canyon last week. The women had been staying in a summerhouse near the canyon over Whitsun weekend. When nobody had heard from them by Tuesday, a search & rescue operation began, RÚV reports.
Pino died as a result of a 30-meter fall over a waterfall into the canyon. Sveinn K. Rúnarsson, police chief in Hvolsvöllur, says that the autopsy revealed that she had not drowned in the canyon, as had previously been assumed, but rather died of injuries sustained in the fall.
Pino’s brothers recently arrived in the country and have asked that her body be cremated in Iceland. They hope to transport her ashes to Spain tomorrow, according to Spanish paper, La Provincia.
According to Sveinn, there is no evidence that Pino’s death was in any way suspicious. Between 10 and 15 people have continued to search the area this week – covering the shoreline down Markarfljót and Markarfljótsaurar. Another search of Bleiksárgljúfur also took place this week, without success.
