Ministry of Ecclesiastical Affairs to Be Shut Down?

Minister of Justice and Ecclesiastical Affairs Björn Bjarnason announced in his speech at a Church Convention on Saturday that the government had discussed eliminating the office of the Minister of Ecclesiastical Affairs and shutting down the ministry.

The National Church would thus be moved from the cabinet to the Office of the Prime Minister, Fréttabladid reports.

Bishop of Iceland Karl Sigurbjörnsson agreed with Bjarnason’s suggestions and said they were appropriate since the cabinet is becoming less and less involved with the church.

Sigurbjörnsson said moving the National Church to the Prime Ministry would be a confirmation of its independency and position, adding he did not believe such changes would contribute to the separation of state and church.
