Minister of the Interior Ögmundur Jónasson (pictured) revealed that he will support the proposal of Independence Party chair Bjarni Benediktsson to dismiss the Icelandic parliament Alþingi’s charges against former Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde.
Ögmundur stated his decision in an interview in Morgunblaðið on Tuesday.
At the time of voting on whether the parliament should press charges against Geir and three other former ministers for misconduct in office leading to the banking collapse, Ögmundur voted in favor of taking all four former ministers to court.
Ögmundur explained that the case changed in character when it turned out that only Geir would be put on trial, turning it into a distorted party political scheme and therefore he has now changed his mind, the minister reasoned.
Left-Green MP Guðfríður Lilja Grétarsdóttir, who is in the same party as Ögmundur, has also expressed similar views on the matter, visir.is reports.
