Minister for Social Affairs Welcomes Refugees

Minister for Social Affairs Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir welcomed the 29 Palestinian refugees, eight women and their children, to the country yesterday, who came to Akranes in west Iceland earlier this month from the Al-Waleed refugee camp in Iraq.

The minister participated in a welcome ceremony organized by the Akranes town council yesterday. In her speech, Sigurdardóttir said she admired the courage of these women who have faced incredible difficulties, violence and danger for the past few years, Morgunbladid reports.

Sigurdardóttir then wished the women and their children well in a new country, adding that refugees have generally been satisfied with their lives in Iceland and become active participants in the Icelandic society.

At the end of her speech, the minister thanked everyone who have participated in preparations for the refugees’ arrival in Akranes.

Iceland first accepted groups of refugees in 1956.
