Minister of Justice Reacts to Shortage of Policemen

Minister of Justice Björn Bjarnason has decided to grant all active police officers a monthly salary bonus to prevent further officers from leaving the force than already have, due to increased work pressure.

Each officer will by paid ISK 30,000 (USD 481, EUR 341) on top of their monthly salaries beginning October 1 until their current wage contract expires on October 31, 2008, Bladid reports.

According to the National Union of Police Officers, the salary bonus was the result of the union’s recent negotiation for the wages of its members with the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Justice.

Since police departments in Iceland were merged last January 1, police officers have been given an increased workload, resulting in increased pressure at work. A number of policemen have therefore resigned.
