Minister of Justice proposes “National Security Department”

Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, RÚV, reports that the Minister of Justice, Björn Bjarnason, has proposed that a “National Security Department” be formed within the National Police. The proposed deparment would be entrusted with monitoring organized crime and preventing acts of terrorism.

The proposal is based on a report by EU experts.

Among other activities, the department would monitor commications and individuals. The proposals call for the department to operate in secret under the supervision of the Icelandic parliament, Althingi, and the courts.
