Minister of Industry Iceland’s Youngest Acting PM

katrinjuliusdottir-radhMinister of Industry and Travel, Katrín Júlíusdóttir, who is 36, made the pages of Icelandic political history yesterday when she became the country’s youngest person to serve as PM.

Júlíusdóttir is filling in for Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir while she attends the Nordic Council meeting currently taking place in Copenhagen, Fréttabladid reports.

Before Júlíusdóttir, Hermann Jónasson was Iceland’s youngest PM when he assumed the position at 37 in 1934.

In other administrative news, Minister of Education and Culture Katrín Jakobsdóttir returned to work yesterday after having completed her maternity leave which began in May.

Minister for the Environment Svandís Svavarsdóttir stepped in for her during that time.

Jakobsdóttir is also Minister for Nordic Cooperation and among her first tasks back in office is to attend the Nordic Council meeting which begins in Copenhagen today, Morgunbladid reports.

Jakobsdóttir was Iceland’s first minister to go on parental leave. Júlíusdóttir will be the second; she is pregnant with twins and her due date is in late February, early March.
