Minister of Finance Not Afraid of US Sanctions

By Iceland Review

Steingrímur J. Sigfússon, Iceland’s Minister of Finance, does not believe the United States government will follow through with their threats of imposing sanctions against Iceland and its whaling policy.

“I doubt they will follow through with the actions. There can be numerous reasons for the Department of Commerce to deliver a statement of this nature at this point in time, one of them being staff turnover. We have reason to believe other sectors of the US government, such as the State Department, will not want to take action,” Sigfússon told radio Rás 2 this morning.

Sigfússon continued to say that “US presidents usually revert to such diplomatic actions when challenged to take action of this nature.”

Sigfússon believes Icelanders have to stand up for themselves and the right to sustainable developments; however the sustainability of whaling depends on export demands of whale products, reports.
