Midwives suspend outpatient services

Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, RÚV, reports that midwives have stopped visiting newly born children and their mothers at home after their current employment contract with the State Social Services Institute expired.

At a union meeting yesterday, the midwives resolved to demand further improvements in their compensation.

The old contract was made twelve years ago, and the midwives maintain that their pay has gone down in real terms by 37% since it was signed.
