The architect firm Zeppelin would like to design and build practical micro-apartments for young people to purchase, RÚV reports. The firm has, in cooperation with investors, applied for a lot on Brekkuás, Garðabær. Young people in Garðabær will be asked for their input as to what sort of apartments they wish for.
Zeppelin architect Orri Árnason says the idea comes from Demark and the goal is for young people to be able to buy their first apartment, accumulate their own savings, which will act as a springboard for the future.
This concept of micro-apartments is new in Iceland, and plans are for a special focus group to be formed, whose task will be to discuss and advise about what sort of housing young people wish for and require. Such apartments would save young people the hassle and high cost of renting ―a situation many young couples get stuck in.
In Zeppelin’s application to the town council of Garðabær, the company suggests the possibility that young people may be ready to do without many things traditionally available in apartments in order to minimize costs: “Compared to traditional space in a traditional apartment, where each space serves only one purpose, we will instead strive to make each space more multi-functional in the apartments we intend to design and build for young people.”
