Messenger of Spring Arrives in Iceland Despite Snow

The national symbol of spring, the golden plover, has arrived in Iceland. A group of the beloved migratory birds was spotted near the village of Eyrarbakki, south Iceland, on Sunday where the ground was covered in snow.

According to a song by Páll Ólafsson, the golden plover has the power to “sing the snow away,” and this week warmer temperatures are forecast, Morgunbladid reports.

Other migratory birds, like ringed plovers, sandpipers, turnstones and oystercatchers were also spotted in south Iceland this weekend, as well as redwings, snipes and godwits.
