Merger of Ministries in Iceland Proposed

By Iceland Review

Among the topics discussed in the ongoing government agenda talks by the ruling parties, the Social Democrats and the Left-Greens, is reducing the number of ministries and altering the division of responsibility among ministries.

According to Morgunbladid’s sources, the primary changes involve reinforcing the Ministry for Business Affairs by relocating projects to the ministry from the Ministry of Finance and the Prime Minister’s Office, including the senior command of the Central Bank.

These changes are of a similar nature as those proposed by Finnish expert Kaarlo Jännäri in a report undertaken at the request of Geir H. Haarde’s government before its collapse last winter.

Other ideas include establishing a new ministry encompassing all industries in stages, that is, the Ministries of Fisheries, Agriculture, Industry and Tourism.
