Memorial House to Eruption Opened at Thorvaldseyri

The photo of Thorvaldseyri farm under the chilling cloud of volcanic ash was one of the memorable images of the Eyjafjallajökull eruption that shook the world for a few weeks in 2010.

Now the farmers at Thorvaldseyri, Ólafur Eggertsson and Gudný A. Valberg have opened a small memorial house on the eruption. Their farm was among those hardest hit by the floods and ash that came from the eruption in the glacier.

The central attraction is a short movie on the effects of the eruption on the farm. From day one a film crew followed events around Thorvaldseyri and how they affected the family. The memorial house also sells souvenirs and products made of home grown grain at Thorvaldseyri.

The Thorvaldseyri farm is situated a few kilometers west from Skógar.
