More than 2,700 people are planning to attend a gathering in memory of Birna Brjánsdóttir on Saturday at 4 pm.
The body of the 20-year-old Birna was found Sunday afternoon in Reykjanes, Southwest Iceland. She had been missing since January 14. Two men are in custody, suspected in her death.
A Facebook event, called ‘In Memory of Birna’ has been created where people are encouraged to gather on Laugavegur 31, where Birna was last seen early Saturday morning, January 14.
The message from the person organizing the event reads, “I encourage everyone to gather and remember Birna Brjánsdóttir, who was taken away from her family, friends and relatives much too early. I didn’t know Birna, but have taken all this to heart, as has the whole nation. Let’s gather and remember Birna where she was last seen on Laugavegur 31, at 4 pm, and let’s then walk down Laugavegur to the pond and float candles.”
Candles were lit at the Icelandic consulate in Tórshavn, the Faroe Islands, yesterday, in memory of Birna, RÚV reports. The previous night, candles were lit in her memory all over Greenland.
