Meeting with Israeli ambassador

By Iceland Review

Foreign Minister Valgerdur Sverrisdóttir met with Israeli ambassador Miryam Shomrat in the Foreign Ministry in Iceland yesterday.

According to Morgunbladid, Sverrisdóttir handed a letter over to the ambassador at the meeting in which the Icelandic government condemns Israel’s attack on a residential area in Beit Hanoun on the Gaza Strip on 8 November, leading to the death of 18 civilians.

About 80 to 100 people protested outside the Foreign Ministry during the meeting to demonstrate their views of the attack. The protests did not reach Shomrat, as she left the Ministry by the back door.

After the meeting Sverrisdóttir told reporters that although the Icelandic government condemns the attack on Beit Hanoun, they respect Israel’s right of self defense. But, she stated, in her opinion, the attack will worsen the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Sverrisdóttir said Shomrat had listened to her comments and explained Israel’s side of the story. The ambassador agreed to deliver Iceland’s letter to the Israeli government.

Israel has stated that technical problems were responsible for the civilian deaths in Beit Hanoun. Sverrisdóttir told reporters that she did not doubt that explanation, but did not consider technical problems as an excuse for the attacks.
