Meat Hook loses his hook

Meat Hook, the twelfth yule lad brother, lost his beloved hook when trying to snatch smoked lamb from a cooler in a supermarket in Borgarnes, southwest Iceland, last night.

The yule lad broke into the store in the hopes of finding his favorite food, smoked lamb. He spotted the delicacy, vacuum-packed inside a cooler, and tried to latch it out with his hook.

But the hook got stuck in something at the bottom of the cooler and no matter how hard Meat Hook tried, he couldn’t loosen it and had to leave it behind.

“Hooking meat has become really difficult,” Meat Hook tells icelandreview.com. The yule lad had developed an expertise in easing his hook down chimneys, jamming it into meat kept in the rafters and pulling it back up, as described in Jólasveinarnir.

“But hardly any houses have chimneys anymore, and if they do, they don’t store any meat in the rafters. All I pull up chimneys these days are old toys and winter clothing,” Meat Hook complains.

His hook is now on display at the National Museum.
