Reykjavík welcomed a record-breaking number of participants to its annual marathon this morning, with over 17,000 runners from 97 countries taking part. Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir had the honour of officially starting the event at 8:30am.
Before the countdown began, the Mayor proudly announced that nearly 300 million krona had been raised through the race’s charitable campaign. “The fundraiser ends at midnight, Monday, August 25th,” she reminded the crowd as RÚV reports.
This year’s event marks the highest number of registered runners since the marathon began. The popularity of the race continues to grow, attracting participants from across the globe.
Runners were able to choose from several race categories, including the full marathon distance of 42.2 kilometres, a half marathon, a 10km run, and a 3km fun run designed for all ages and abilities. The atmosphere in Iceland’s capital was electric, with both locals and international visitors cheering on athletes as they took to the scenic city routes.
Reykjavík Marathon takes place ahead of Culture Night, the city’s most expansive and vibrant summer event. More information about the marathon on the official website.
