Mayor of Reykjavík to Save Old Buildings

Mayor of Reykjavík Dagur B. Eggertsson wants the City to cover the cost of relocating the buildings on Laugavegur 4-6 to public park Hljómskálagardurinn and renovating them, so that they will look like they did originally.

The House Preservation Society has requested that the buildings will not be demolished like the owner of one of the lots had planned. Eggertsson contacted the owner yesterday to present his idea as an alternative to tearing the building down, Morgunbladid reports.

“I believe it is important to do whatever we can to ensure that the buildings will not be demolished,” the Mayor said. No agreement regarding relocating the buildings has been reached yet, but a meeting between the owner and the urban planning director of Reykjavík City is scheduled today.
