Mayor of Reykjavík Protests Outside Parliament

Mayor of Reykjavík Jón Gnarr is among the people currently protesting human rights violations in Slovakia outside Althingi, the Icelandic parliament, in a demonstration organized by the Iceland division of Amnesty International. It began around 9 am.

Slovakian president Ivan Gašparovič is on an official visit to Iceland and will meet with Icelandic parliamentarians today, reports.

“The Icelandic division of Amnesty International has sent a letter to the prime minister, foreign minister, the president of Iceland and MPs encouraging the Icelandic government to bring human rights violations against Roma children in Slovakia […] to the Slovakian president’s attention,” it says in a statement from the organization.

Yesterday, Gašparovič and his Icelandic counterpart Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson met at the presidential residence Bessastadir where they discussed Iceland’s application to the European Union and the harnessing of geothermal energy, among other subjects.

According to, Gašparovič will also meet with Prime Minister of Iceland Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir today before leaving the country.
