Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir will be the next mayor of Reykjavík and the leader of the Independence party in the Reykjavík city council. Vilhjálumur Thór Vilhjálmson, the chairman of Independence party city council members, announced this at a press meeting on Saturday.
Members of the Independence party hope that this decision will put an end to the leadership crises that the party has been going through.
According to the agreement between the Independence party and the Liberal party, a candidate from the Independence party should take over in March 2009. When the pact was signed it stated that Vilhjálmsson would be the candidate from the Independence party, but he has had a hard time gaining trust from the people of Reykjavík. Fréttabladid reports.
Members of the Independence party wished Kristjánsdóttir all the best and hope that she will be able to unite the council members again and regain the trust of voters. According to the latest opinion polls however, support for the Independence party in Reykjavík is at all time low.
