Mass protest organized in Iceland

The campaign group Saving Iceland is organizing a mass protest against heavy industry on the island. Protesters will convene on July 6, in a secret location which will not be revealed until shortly before the set date.

According to Fréttabladid, the protesters will take direct action against heavy industry projects, like chaining themselves to machines; Saving Iceland especially encourages experienced protesters to attend.

One of the organizers, Ólafur Páll Sigurdsson, said concerts are planned at the protesters’ camp and said some of the musicians scheduled to play are world famous.

Sigurdsson would not reveal how many protesters are expected to convene in Iceland this summer, but said that due to foreign media coverage of last year’s protests people are more interested to participate than ever.

Protesters will meet in Reykjavík and in Egilsstadir, east Iceland, and from there they will travel to the camp. Saving Iceland warns its protesters about the police, who may confiscate equipment like bicycle locks and ropes.

Óskar Bjartmarz, a senior police officer in Egilsstadir, told Fréttabladid the police will not take any measures until it is clear where the protests will take place. “We don’t even know whether they will be in east Iceland.”
