Mass Layoffs in June

Four companies announced plans for mass layoffs in the month of June. One hundred and twenty-three workers lost their jobs during the layoffs.

These are the highest numbers of discharges since January this year when a total of 140 workers in four different companies were laid off.

Yesterday, Gissur Pétursson, the director of the Directorate of Labor, told Morgunbladid he could not name the companies in question but their business functions are in the fields of commerce, sports and education. The mass layoffs are part of internal restructuring.

This year has seen occurrences of mass layoffs in 16 companies and institutions with a total of 500 workers laid off. According to information given by the Directorate of Labor, mass layoffs occurred 29 times last year leaving a total of 742 workers unemployed; most discharges took place in the construction industry.
