The race kicked off at 9 am with 306—217 men and 89 women—contestants registered. A record number of foreign participants are taking part, or 126 people from 27 countries. The age of competitors range from 22 to 72, reports.

The race is 55 kilometers long and the first competitors are expected to cross the line before 2 pm today.

The weather conditions in South Iceland have not been favorable, with rain and cool temperatures.

The Laugavegur trail was recently named one of the best hikes in the world, the 20 “dream trails,” according to National Geographic.
