Many Roads Closed around Iceland

By Iceland Review

Many roads in northern Iceland are closed after heavy snowfall last night, reports.

Road 62, the only road connecting Patreksfjörður, Bíldudalur and Tálknafjörður in the southern part of the West Fjords is closed.

Road 61 to Ísafjörður is still open but only for large vehicles. Road 76 from Skagafjörður to Siglufjörður is closed, due to an avalanche which fell late last night.

Road 82, the other road connecting Siglufjörður to the Eyjafjörður region, is still open but only for 4×4 vehicles due to heavy snowfall in Héðinsfjörður.

Road 744, the Þverárfjall mountain pass connecting Blönduós and Sauðárkrókur in Skagafjörður is also closed.

Ring Road 1 between Akureyri and Skagafjörður is closed at the Öxnadalsheiði mountain pass. From Akureyri you can drive to Lake Mývatn but all roads connecting North and East Iceland are closed as is Road 93 connecting Seyðisfjörður to the rest of Iceland.

Ring Road 1 is clear from Höfn in Southeast Iceland all the way to Borgarnes, north of Reykjavík.

Road 85 at Sandvíkurheiði, which connects Vopnafjörður and Bakkafjörður in Northeast Iceland, is also closed.

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration is working hard to open the closed roads.
