Many Icelanders Opt for Warm and Sunny Holidays

The sale of holiday packages to warm and sunny locations over Christmas has gone well this year with more people traveling at this time of year than in 2008 and 2009. The most popular locations are the Canary Islands and the Spanish mainland, as in past years.

“The first group traveled to the Canary Islands on December 11 and some of them will stay until after Christmas and New Years. Then we sent two full planes to Tenerife and Las Palmas this week,” Tómas Gestsson, managing director of travel agency Heimsferdir, told Morgunbladid.

“We have seen an increase since last year, especially in trips to the Canaries,” added Thorsteinn Gudjónsson, director of the travel agency Úrval-Útsýn, which also operates Plúsferdir. The total increase is 15-20 percent between 2009 and 2010.

Skiing trips will begin at the end of January and sales are going strong. “The skiing trips are almost sold out so the winter looks good,” commented Gestsson.
